What Is Mental Math Training?

Mental math (also called mental arithmetic or 珠心算) trains children to calculate rapidly in their head without pen, paper, or calculator. At Shenmo Education, we use the abacus as a tool to develop this ability.

The process works in 3 stages:

  1. Physical abacus — children learn to move beads and understand number relationships
  2. Transitional — children visualize the abacus while doing calculations
  3. Mental math mastery — children calculate complex problems mentally with speed and accuracy
