Beginning abacus and mental arithmetic
Ages 4–12 · Classes of 4–6 · Tuesday and Sunday · 90-minute regular lessons
Explore the abacus
Start by recognising beads and place value, reading a number and following a demonstrated bead movement. Link a written number to its representation on the abacus.
Notice understanding
At a trial, observe whether your child can follow a step, explain what they are doing and respond to a helpful prompt. Speed alone is not a measure of understanding.
Plan the next steps
The teacher can discuss a suitable level and practice routine. Mental arithmetic and more complex exercises should follow the child’s readiness.
